Africa's Wild Wonders

Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest — joined by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles — complete one of the most remarkable journeys on the planet. The Great Migration is not a single event; it is a year-round, 1,800-kilometre circuit across the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. If seeing it is on your bucket list, this guide tells you exactly where to be and when in 2026.

What Is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the largest overland animal movement on Earth. Driven entirely by rainfall and the growth of fresh grass, the herds move in a clockwise loop — south to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for calving, then north-west through the central Serengeti, on to the Western Corridor, north to the Mara River, and eventually back south again.

There is no single “start” or “finish” — the animals move continuously. What changes month to month is where the action is most concentrated, and which dramatic scenes — calving, predator hunts, or river crossings — you are most likely to witness.

Great Migration 2026: Month-by-Month Locations

The Famous River Crossings

Nothing prepares you for a Mara River crossing. The wildebeest pace along the bank for hours — instinct warning them of the crocodiles below — until the pressure of the herd behind forces the first brave animals into the water. Within minutes, thousands are churning across in a boiling mass of hooves and spray, while two-metre Nile crocodiles launch from the shallows.

The crossings happen at the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti — you can witness them entirely from the Tanzanian side, no border crossing needed. Prime viewing points: Lamai Wedge and Kogatende.

Best months: July, August, September. Allow a minimum of 3–4 nights in the northern Serengeti for the best odds.

Best Areas for the Migration

Calving Season (January–March): Ndutu & Southern Serengeti

Stay near the Ndutu area where herds concentrate on the short-grass plains. Mobile camps move with the animals.

River Crossings (July–October): Northern Serengeti

Kogatende and Lamai areas offer closest access to the Mara River crossing points. Camps book up a year or more in advance — availability for July–August 2026 is already limited.

Year-Round: Central Serengeti (Seronera)

Resident prides of lions, leopards in sausage trees, and enormous hippo pools make it worth visiting at any time of year.

How to Book a Great Migration Safari

  • Book early. Peak-season camps fill 12–18 months ahead.
  • Stay longer. A minimum of 7 days lets you cover multiple zones.
  • Use a specialist. The migration is not fixed — an expert tracks conditions in real time.
  • Combine destinations. Pair Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Great Migration only in Kenya?

No. The migration spends roughly 10 months in Tanzania. The Mara River crossings can be watched entirely from the Tanzanian side — no Kenya trip needed.

What is the best month to see it in 2026?

Calving and predator action: January–February. River crossings: July–August. Value and lower crowds: October–November.

How long should I spend in the Serengeti?

At least 3 nights in any one area. For a complete migration circuit, 5–7 nights across two zones is ideal.

Can I see it on a budget?

Budget camping safaris exist, but peak-season northern camps are mostly mid-range to luxury. Better value in calving season (January–February) and green season (April–May).
